Geocoding

OVERVIEW

Geocoding is the process of converting addresses (like “1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA”) into geographic coordinates (like latitude 37.423021 and longitude -122.083739), which you can use to place markers on a map, or position the map.  The Geocoding Node is an add-in node that allows users to take advantage of the Census, Google or Geocodio free address validation and conversion API.  These APIs not only generate the exact coordinates for all your addresses, but also can help to clean up and reformat your address data.

API FEATURES

  1. Census API
    • No registration necessary
    • No limitation on records
  2. Google API
    • Account required and API key necessary
    • Limitation of 2,500 records per day
  3. Geocodio API
    • Account required and API key necessary
    • Limitation of 2,500 records per day

CENSUS GEOCODING

  1. Setting up the node
    1. Connect the Geocoding Node to your input containing your address information
    2. Leave the Token field blank
    3. Type in Census in the API Value field
    4. Select corresponding column from your data for each requested entry
  2. Running the node
    1. The Geocoding node simply adds new fields to your dataset, so you can run this to an output or include additional tasks in your process.

GOOGLE GEOCODING

  1. Setting up an account
    1. Go to https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/geocoding/intro
    2. Select ‘Get A Key’ on the top right of the web page
    3. Create a new project or choose an existing one
    4. Copy the API Key and save it somewhere locally
  2. Setting up the node
    1. Connect the Geocoding Node to your input containing your address information
    2. Open the node and paste in your API key
    3. Type in Google in the API row
    4. Select corresponding column from your data for each requested entry

GEOCODIO GEOCODING

  1. Setting up an account
    1. Go to https://geocod.io/
    2. Select ‘Get An API Key’
    3. Create an account and once logged in select ‘Create your first API Key’ and name it Veera Construct
    4. Copy the API Key and save it somewhere locally
  2. Setting up the node
    1. Connect the Geocoding Node to your input containing your address information
    2. Open the node and paste in your API key
    3. Type in Geocodio in the API row
    4. Select corresponding column from your data for each requested entry

While Google and Geocodio are free applications, both APIs limit the number of requests to 2,500 queries per day.  This means you can only submit 2,500 rows of data per day for validation.  If you see this error, then you have reached your limit for the day:
