Rapid Insight Conference Recap

For Throwback Thursday we wanted to share a recap of our Rapid Insight Conference from Senior Statistical Analyst, Jon MacMillan. The Conference was back in June but the insights still are worth sharing for today’s #TBT…

In my role as an analyst, I work with our customers on a daily basis so I feel like I have a pretty good idea of some of the models and reports that they are creating using our tools… until I go to the conference. It amazes me to see the work that they are doing on a daily basis. In that way, the conference is not only beneficial to our customers, but also to our employees.

This year the Rapid Insight Conference was held at the MIT Campus in Cambridge, MA, just across the Charles River from Boston. We have seen steady growth in attendees since our first conference in 2009 which had 20 in attendance. This year we had 80+ attendees from over 50 different institutions. The attendees were in all different facets of higher education; from research analysts, to technology managers, to associate provosts and senior vice presidents. We also had community colleges, 4-Year non-profits, 4-year for profits, law schools and graduate schools in attendance.

In addition to hosting two days of customer presentations focused around predictive modeling and data analysis, this is the second year that we have also included a third day that kicks off the conference called Rapid Insight University Day. University Day is an opportunity for users to immerse themselves in all things Rapid Insight with presentations by Rapid Insight staff. Presentations range in topics from introductory walkthroughs of our software to an in-depth review of the statistical theories underlying our predictive modeling approach, as well as offering hands-on lab time with RI staff. This year we saw nearly three-quarters of all attendees also participate in University Day.

The first day of the conference was kicked off with a presentation from Dr. Robert Massa who is the Senior VP for Enrollment & Institutional Planning at Drew University. His presentation focused around the collaboration of higher education staff to effectively leverage data to better serve the institution and the students.

There were too many great presentations to highlight here, but here are the main topics that were covered:

  • A number of presentations focused on automating reports and daily duties through the use of Veera. One notable presentation was presented by Johnny Lail from Western Carolina University which was all about becoming fully automated. Since then Johnny has uploaded jobs to the Rapid Insight Collaborative Cloud so that you may check out some of his work.Note- the RI Collaborative Cloud is accessible from the menu within Veera.

  • Predictive modeling theory was another topic of interest. Presentations were focused on how many years of data should be used, how to use the results of a predictive model, and even how to predict which courses the freshmen class will register for.
  • Finally, there were a number or presentations focused on building trust with data. This is often an issue in higher education, especially getting buy-in and creating actionable information. A number of speakers discussed exactly how they are doing that on their campuses.

As the conference went along there were some tweeters in the audience highlighting some of the noteworthy quotes as well as some that were just outright interesting. I think this may be the highlight from RI Conference 2015:

For those of you wondering what the heck Michael Dean was talking about: Armless Burpee

If you are interested in any of the presentations, let us know and we would be happy to send those along. RI Conference 2016 is still in the planning stages so stay tuned for our next destination and we hope to see you there!
