Collaboration Time at Dickinson College
“Collaboration allows teachers to capture each other’s fund of collective intelligence.” -Mike Schmoker
My colleague, Eric Derby, and I just returned from a predictive modeling workshop at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA. The workshop was the brainchild of Dr. Mike Johnson, who wanted to put together a day of sharing and learning about predictive modeling for institutions in his area. The event ended up taking off with professionals representing 18 colleges from Michigan to Maryland working together to build and improve their models, with breaks for discussions.
The combined experience of all of the participants provided us with insight on variables to avoid, how to implement models efficiently, how to explain results to decision-makers, and general best practices for gathering and working with data. While data and structure varied from institution to institution, there was a lot of common ground from which to glean some pointers going forward. Sometimes it’s nice to take a break from the daily office grind to focus specifically on a particular project, and based on the feedback, I think this event provided that opportunity.
We’re thinking of taking the concept on the road and doing it at some other institutions in the future. If you are interested in hosting a predictive modeling day, contact us.
We also have another predictive modeling learning opportunity coming up. It’s called RI University Day and it will take place on October 28th at the Rapid Insight headquarters in Conway, NH. Stay tuned for more details.
